Recycling is rubbish

“we urgently need residents to use the waste and recycling services correctly in order for them to be most effective”

EVER WONDER what happens to your carefully-sorted recycling? A Margate resident filmed Thanet council bin men going about their job, cheerfully grabbing the bags he and his neighbours had organised… and throwing them all together into the back on a dustbin lorry, ready to head off to landfill.

Michael Bishops’s video was soon online. It shows at least eight blue recyclable bags being thrown into the back of the truck with all the black sacks containing the ordinary rubbish. According to local paper Thanet Extra, it would then have headed off to landfill near Canterbury.
Mr. Bishop said, “I’ve grown tired of the council’s recycling promises so I decided to film them doing the dirty on everyone who carefully separated and cleaned their recycling, only for it to be thrown into landfill.”

Thanet council claimed that the blue sacks, which don’t appear to be examined by the bin men, must have somehow been contaminated or put out late. Its spokesman said, “The video highlights the issue that the council has with contaminated waste and we urgently need residents to use the waste and recycling services correctly in order for them to be most effective.

“Properties in this area have been sent information in three different languages in an effort to resolve this issue. We have also door-knocked thousands of residents who are provided with any type of recycling service to highlight the importance of using the correct waste collections.”
